Apple admits to slowing iPhones as batteries age

The company's explanation means that the iPhone has an algorithm to keep the device running at optimal performance - preventing it from shutting down entirely - when the older battery inside the gadget can't keep up with the required power.

Apple has admitted that, it is slowing down older iPhones to improve overall user experience and to offer better battery life.

Apple insists the updates were made with a different goal in mind: It said the performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, which can sometimes cause phones to suddenly shut down in order to protect their components.

A year ago we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions.

The Warriors are banged up but getting healthier, and, by the way, have won 11 in a row. The Warriors are now the hottest team in the league, riding an 11-game winning streak.

But the updates can also lead to disappointing speeds.

"The inevitable outcome of it will be an inherent slowdown of the average response times by the system", he explained. The company stated that this feature started with iOS 10.2.1 and most recently came to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2.

The revelation sparked an outcry among Apple fans, with some suggesting they may switch to rival Samsung.

The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries.

- Samuel Burke contributed reporting. "Apple's failure to inform consumers these updates would wreak havoc on the phone's performance is being deemed purposeful, and if proven, constitutes the unlawful and decisive withholding of material information", says the press release for the lawsuit. Users can test phone battery health with apps such as Battery Life.

The phenomenon, discovered by Reddit members and acknowledged last week by Apple, throws gasoline onto a long-standing conspiracy theory that iPhones slow to crawl as a sly way to convince us to buy new ones.

We first saw news of the lawsuits at Apple Insider. The only possible way that one can do is to replace the battery via official Apple service centre.

When an iPhone's processor makes a big current draw from a flagging battery, the battery can deliver the current in spikes that can potentially damage the phone's electronics.

With the arrival of Chromebooks running on Snapdragon 845 however, Google could yet again weaken Microsoft's grip on the market. Since Chrome OS's early days, there have only been a handful of devices that used an ARM chipset.
