Bitcoin exchange NiceHash robbed of $64 million from its wallet

"We are working to verify the precise number of BTC (bitcoin) taken", the company said.

NiceHash is a cryptocurrency mining application that matches those with spare computing to power to miners wanting to create new coins.

The news was confirmed by NiceHash after the service went offline claiming to be undergoing maintenance.

While NiceHash has yet to place an amount on how much is stolen, a Bitcoin wallet address highlighted by NiceHash users that appeared Wednesday and has received a large deposit out of nowhere contains 4,736.42 BTC, valued at about $62 million at current prices. "In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency", it said. We are fully committed to restoring the NiceHash service with the highest security measures at the earliest opportunity.

CNBC reached out to NiceHash Chief Executive Marko Kobal for comment but he was not available at the time of publication.

Nicehash is further recommending that users of its internal wallets change all of their online passwords (especially any that were similar to the one they used on the site) as a precaution.

"We are truly sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused and are committing every resource towards solving this issue as soon as possible", the statement added.
