Is this the formula for reversing type 2 diabetes?

The weight-loss diet plan was a shake-like formula of 825-853 calories that was taken every day for three to five months.

The first-year results of a clinical trial have shown that nearly half of people partaking in an intensive weight management program delivered through primary care achieved remission of their type 2 diabetes without medication. They could revolutionise the way type 2 diabetes is treated. "Diet and lifestyle are touched upon but diabetes remission by cutting calories is rarely discussed", said co-researcher Professor Roy Taylor from Newcastle University. The study claims their diabetes went into remission without any medication.

Remission was closely tied to the degree of weight lost, occurring in around nine out of 10 people who lost 15 kg or more, and almost three-quarters of those who lost 10kg or more. This builds on the work into the underlying cause of the condition, so that we can target management effectively.

It took the researchers 20 years to excavate and reconstruct the skeleton, which was found in a cave outside of Johannesburg . The first fragments of bones belonging to Little Foot were found in 1994 followed by more in 1997.

The team previously confirmed that Type 2 diabetes is caused by excess fat within the liver and pancreas, and that consuming a very low calorie diet could restore normal glucose. He said: 'Many GPs will be able to think of personal examples where a patient with type 2 diabetes gets hold of their lifestyle by the scruff of the neck and manages to reverse their disease, so it is pleasing to see that this may be practical on a larger scale.

It's fairly standard practice for physicians to encourage, if not prescribe, a healthy diet for most of their patients, especially those with type 2 diabetes.

"A major difference from other studies is that we advised a period of dietary weight loss with no increase in physical activity, but during the long-term follow up increased daily activity is important", Taylor said.

Champions League last-16 teams confirmed
Manchester United: Bayern Munich, Juventus , Real Madrid, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli, Porto or RB Leipzig. Teams from the same country cannot play each other in the last 16, which limits who Chelsea can play in first knockout stage.

Roy Taylor, a professor at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom who co-led the study said in a statement announcing the findings that the impact that diet and lifestyle has on diabetes are "rarely discussed". According to a Hindustan Times report, the number has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Those numbers are expected to reach 642 million by 2040.

These findings present a hopeful option not just for improved management of the condition, but a potential cure.

Among those who lost the most weight the results were even more extraordinary, the Lancet publication shows. Diabetes remission can also be achieved with bariatric weight loss surgery, but it's more expensive and risky than a change in diet. "The big challenge is long-term avoidance of weight re-gain".
