Jets, showing no spark on offense, fall to Chargers

Bidding to become only the second team since the 1970 merger to make the playoffs after an 0-4 start, the Chargers beat the New York Jets 14-7 Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

For whatever reason, the Jets seem to always find themselves on the wrong end of freaky, noteworthy National Football League plays (Butt Fumble).

Though the Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up the AFC West title on Sunday, the Chargers (8-7) remain alive for a wild-card spot because the Tennessee Titans lost to the Los Angeles Rams. Petty, the Jets' quarterback, threw a fourth-down pass incomplete into the end zone, that wasn't close to being caught by wide receiver Robby Anderson. Gordon also had a 1-yard run for a score, and now has 12 total touchdowns on the season. And he's clearly not too shabby on defense, either.

The Chargers had a chance to increase their advantage early in the third quarter, but Nick Rose, signed earlier this week, was wide right on a 47-yard attempt. The Chargers now have a 1,000-yard rusher in Gordon (1,012) and a 1,000-yard receiver in Keenan Allen (1,250) for the first time since 2013 (when Ryan Mathews had 1,255 rushing yards and Allen had 1,046 receiving yards).

Petty finished his second start 15-of-28 for 119 yards with no touchdowns and the pick. It was the first career interception for Allen, who was tackled by Brandon Shell. Instead, it went down as a 14-yard return for Benjamin.

The Jets' (5-10) loss guarantees a second consecutive 10-loss season under coach Todd Bowles. His $16.75 million salary for next season is fully guaranteed against a serious injury.

He said he turned around saw "people literally getting thrown into the air as it hit them". "It was chaos everywhere you looked". Officers can be be seen checking his pulse, and trying to revive him as they turn him onto his back by slapping his face.

The Jets played this game without two starting defensive linemen: End Muhammad Wilkerson (healthy scratch) and Leonard Williams (second-half back injury).

NY became the second team this season to attempt an onside kick to open a game, joining Tennessee (Week 1).

The Jets came away without any points, though, as an offensive pass interference call on Anderson and a sack by Tenny Palepoi short-circuited New York's drive. And the regular season concludes next Sunday when the Jets visit the New England Patriots.
