Met Office upgrades snow warning to amber

According to Met Eireann there will be wintry showers right across the country with accumulations of snow over northern areas.

Forecasters said there could be a flurry of the white stuff on Friday and overnight into Saturday.

Most of the wintry showers will fall at night and snow is expected to gather on higher ground.

An update on the Met Office website reads: 'A spell of heavy snow is possible over some central parts of the United Kingdom during Sunday. The north and northwest of the country will be most at risk, as well as higher ground in other places.

"There will be a cold spell for the next ten days". Minimum temperatures are expected to be between minus 2 and plus 2 Celsius, with frost and icy stretches. There may be a light dusting of snow around the country, and it may stick in places in the north and northwest.

Forecasters had earlier warned it will be "bitterly cold" for the rest of the week despite a mild day today.
