Speaking on the last day of NATO's foreign ministers' conference in Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that the alliance was committed to the security of Georgia, a former Soviet republic that has battled the Russia-backed separatist movements of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meetings held at the level of foreign ministers in Brussels made clear its intentions for increased cooperation with the European Union, and reaffirmed its engagements on the eastern borders of its zone of influence.

"In a constantly evolving security landscape, NATO's partnership with the European Union is more important than ever", the secretary general said before the meeting. The two northern entities have been recognized by a handful of states, but the US and its Western European allies have accused Russian Federation of undermining Georgia's sovereignty with its support, a charge they have also lobbed against Moscow for its involvement in Ukraine.

"We are very very for strengthening the cooperation with the Georgian coastguard. because the Black Sea is of great importance for Georgia but also of course for Nato", Stoltenberg said.

"We call on Russian Federation to end its recognition of these regions and withdraw its forces from Georgian territory", he added. Moscow keeps troops in both regions in what Georgia considers an occupation.

"Our armed forces are increasingly capable of operating together, and planning is already under way for the 2019 NATO-Georgia joint military exercise", the secretary-general said.

"When we look at the summit, which will take place next July, we agreed that we will continue to strengthen deterrence and defence and to continue the dialogue and to support our partners in Eastern Europe", - said Stoltenberg.
