Twentieth Century Fox confirmed that it had fired the director after he became unreliable, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The trade writes that the studio chose to ax Singer after the director disappeared from set and allegedly got into a confrontation with star Rami Malek, who plays the late Freddie Mercury in the film.

Singer's constant absence even resulted in the film's cinematographer, Thomas Newton Sigel, to step in as director for multiple days when Singer didn't show. Sources close to the outlet state that Tom Hollander, who portrays Queen band manager Jim Beach, "briefly quit the film" due to Singer's erratic behavior, though he was ultimately "persuaded to return".

This behavior comes at the same time that past allegations of the director's sexual misconduct have begun to surface, which have all been denied by Singer. Now the studio is reporting that Singer's truancy is one of the reasons for his termination.
