In controversial remarks, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "neech aadmi" (vile man), who does "dirty politics".

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi said he do not agree with the language used by Aiyar. He also maintained that he never called Modi a "low born".

The swift reaction by Congress followed Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi berating Aiyar for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "neech" person. "Have I done any "neech" work?" "Have I done any neech work in my public life?" That is my culture. "This is a Mughal mentality where if such a person (who comes from a humble background) wears good clothes in a village, they have a problem", Modi said. "It is an insult to poor people of India and Gujarat". "Not just to Gujarat but to the entire nation". Everyday PM is using foul language against our leaders. We wish them well. They insulted me when I was the Chief Minister. We have nothing to say to such elements. "People will answer them through the ballot box".

Reporters got around to Aiyar at a function in Delhi's WWF Auditorium Hall and asked him about Modi's attack and Gandhi's suggestion to him to apologize. These are some words or phrases the Congress has used for PM Modi in the past.

Speaking to ANI, Aiyar had said, "Ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, is mein koi sabhyata nahi hai, aur aise mauke par is kisam ki gandi rajniti karne ki kya avashyakta hai?" I never meant low-born. I tend to think in English when I speak in Hindi as Hindi is not my mother tongue. Why would he use such a low language for the Congress on such an occasion. Aiyar's mindset is a "darbaari" one'. The prime minister also accused the Congress leadership of having a "Mughal" mindset.

While appealing to the people to vote for BJP, the PM said, "Nothing can stop me from giving back to the poor what belongs to them".
