Target launches Wallet for in-store mobile payments

"Wallet in the Target app makes checkout easier and faster than ever", said Mike McNamara, Target's chief information and digital officer. Shoppers will also receive five percent back by using the Target REDcard, which can be pre-uploaded to the app. With Wallet, you can checkout using your Target REDcard and use coupons via the retailer's Cartwheel program all at once.

After almost two years since the news broke of its plans to launch its own digital wallet, Target has finally launched Target Wallet, joining the myriad retailers that have gone with their own proprietary mobile payment solution. After you're done shopping, you can present your Wallet barcode at the register to check out.

Trading was highly volatile throughout the day ahead of RBI's monetary policy review and Gujarat elections later this week. According to provisional data, foreign funds had bought shares worth Rs 306.11 crore on Friday.

According to Target, Wallet enables shoppers to checkout four times faster than "other payment types", a nice kick to the shin to traditional payment methods like chip-and-PIN cards. Wallet is now restricted to Target's REDcard credit card and debit card. Customers will eventually be able to store and redeem Target GiftCards in the future as well.

Target's mobile wallet follows the launch of digital wallets by several other retailers, notably Walmart, which has been focusing more on its digital presence as it looks to compete with online e-commerce company Amazon. According to the company, the feature will also allow customers to keep Cartwheel offers, Weekly Ad coupons and payment options in the same app. While this is promised to greatly speed up the payment process, it does put the burned on the customer to have yet another mobile payment system to mind.
