A squirrel was found to be responsible for cutting multiple Christmas light wires in a New Jersey town.

Officials in Sea Girt, 65 miles south of New York City, spent the past week scrambling to replace the display's severed wires in time for the borough's annual tree lighting on Friday, WNBC-TV reported.

Sea Girt police Captain Justin Macko showed NBC 4 NY some of the damaged wires Thursday.

In a 62-37 vote Tuesday, the US Senate confirmed President Donald Trump's nominee, Kirstjen Nielsen, to head the Department of Homeland Security.

On Saturday, police said that surveillance cameras showed the squirrel trying to gnaw through the wires that morning.

'It tells me they definitely wanted to do it and they want to accomplish their goal of making sure the lights don't work, ' he said.

The squirrel was then "charged" with criminal mischief and released on bail.

The squirrel caused some holiday chaos after he chewed through the wires of the town's Christmas tree.

However, as it turns out, the culprit was actually a little squirrel who was just having a light nibble on the lights to keep himself busy.
