The 2017 deportations were lower than at any time during the Obama administration, according to previous DHS statistics.

Local officials and immigration advocates say the Trump administration's policies have put immigrant communities on edge, with people afraid to go to school, report domestic violence, attend church or even seek medical attention.

ICE said that in Colorado and Wyoming, 2,746 people were arrested and 2,535 were removed from the U.S.in the 2017 fiscal year, which ran from October 1 of last year through September 30 of this year. Thomas Homan, deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, spoke Tuesday in Washington as the federal government announced that Border Patrol arrests plunged to a 45-year-low in the last fiscal year while arrests by deportation officers soared. Unions representing workers from both agencies endorsed Mr. Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"The Trump administration has been unapologetic about its war on immigrant families and a deeply problematic enforcement agency at ICE has been only too happy to carry out orders meant to de-diversify this country". Arrests were up 20 percent over the same period, from 2,284 in 2016.

"We're still arresting almost 1,000 people a day coming across the border", said Ronald Vitiello, the CBP acting deputy commissioner.

Homan says the Trump administration has cast a wider net when picking up people for deportation. He said most of those individuals were arrested in so-called "sanctuary cities", or jurisdictions that do not use local funds or resources to enforce federal immigration laws or that deny US immigration officials access to local jails. "The border is in more control than it has been in quite some time, but this is a time to accelerate those gains, and having an enforcement zone and having the equipment for our agents to operate safely will prevent future problems for us".
