The Indian cabinet has backed a bill that will make the Islamic practice of instant divorce a criminal offence.

The Supreme Court paved the way for the proposed bill after it ruled in August that it was unconstitutional to allow men invoke triple talaq - the practice of repeating the word "talaq", or "divorce", three times to annul one's marriage.

Under the draft law, triple talaq in any form - spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp - would be bad or illegal and void. The states were asked to submit their views by December 10.

The draft for the bill has been drafted by a group of ministers led by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
The government had earlier constituted a ministerial committee to draft a suitable legistlation which would make instantaneous practice of triple talaq an offence.
