The arrival of Wonder Woman on the big screen was at least 30 years overdue, but the fact that we've had Scarlett Johansson kicking ass as Black Widow for almost a decade (in six films across three different franchises) on screen with no solo movie to call her own has always seemed a little weird. Although the publication's sources say it is still very early in the development process, the move at least brings us closer to an actual film. Variety reports that Marvel studios has put the wheels in motion on the long-speculated project and recruited TiMER writer/director Jac Schaffer to pen the script. Chris Hemsworth has said a Black Widow movie would "clean up", Anthony Mackie has detailed what he wants in a Black Widow film, and Marvel Movies boss Kevin Feige said he's creatively and emotionally committed' to making a full-length feature about Natasha Romanoff. Marvel has yet to officially comment on the report, so it is unclear as to how accurate Variety's report is.

Johansson would return to play the character that she has played in six films now, with a seventh coming in Avengers: Infinity War. The creative has gone on to write the 2014 Black List film The shower starring Anne Hathaway, who was so pleased to have worked with Schaeffer that she later approached her to write Nasty Women, an upcoming female-focused remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels expected to star Hathaway and Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson. "She's a lead Avenger and has awesome stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise". All that's confirmed is a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, out in the U.S. 5 July 2019, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, rumoured for 2020. Schaeffer's was apparently the best, or the one that Feige liked the most. "We think she's an awesome character".
