Canada to provide $12-million to humanitarian groups in Yemen


Saudi Arabia, which leads a military coalition of around ten Muslim-Arab countries, has been criticised for its military presence in Yemen. The meeting would mobilise the urgent resources required to address the critical situation and provide the requirements of the current phase in coordination with the Yemeni Government and regional and worldwide partners, including King Salman Relief Center, the United Nations and its humanitarian and development agencies, through the OIC humanitarian action coordination mechanism.

With the crisis in war-ravaged Yemen continuing to deteriorate, United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners have launched a $2.96 billion response plan to reach over 13 million people with lifesaving assistance.

The Saudis have allocated almost $57 billion for military spending in 2018, or about 22 percent of the overall government budget for this year.

Beginning in 2015, a Riyadh-backed regime has been struggling to keep power in Yemen against a rebellion of Tehran-backed armed Houthi militants, in a proxy war between two major Middle East powers that has seen over 10,000 killed, including over half of those casualties counted as civilians.
