CES 2018: Vivo showcases in-display fingerprint sensor featuring smartphone

Synaptics unveiled the first in-display fingerprint scanner late a year ago and the company also revealed that the first phone to sport the new technology would would be launched at CES 2018, in Las Vegas. This means that unlike previous year, Vivo will showcase a finished product rather than a prototype. The Synaptics, the Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display only when needed. Synaptics "Clear ID" FS9500 is a family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors designed for smartphones.

While this is expected to make headlines, it won't be the first time for Vivo.

The 2-in-1 is built from an aluminum CNC machined chassis with a new angular profile of 19.5mm and it weighs 2.1 kg. The display features Nvidia G-Sync and Nvidia Shield integration for an improved gaming experience.

Coming to the technology used, the company is using Piezoelectric currents to push fingerprint verification under OLED displays and even in the metallic back panel of the phones. The need for in-display fingerprint scanners has risen after smartphone makers have switched to a full display. The chip has the model name Clear ID FS9500 and it is created to work with phones with an 18:9 and 20:9 orientation.

With the in-built fingerprint sensor technology, the smartphone will become a bezel-less phone and the display of the phone will be able to read the fingerprints. The latest fingerprint scanning technology will enable users to unlock their smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display. Since vivo can now utilize the under display fingerprint sensor, that means they can nearly maximize the front screen fully and rumours have it that it's measured 6.43-inch.

Addressing the gathering, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj credited Modi's leadership for India's growing stature globally. He also talked about India's ancient holistic living, saying this can address world's rising concerns about health care.

The overall process takes just 0.7 seconds, not quite as fast as the 0.2 seconds that are commonly advertized for traditional fingerprint scanners these days, but still faster than the average of 1.4 seconds it takes to use face recognition.
