China Shuts Down Marriot Website Over Taiwan and Tibet Error

Delta Airlines has apologised for listing Tibet and Taiwan as independent countries on its official website and promised to take immediate measures to correct the mistakes.

The Shanghai Cyberspace Authority said Marriott was ordered to "to conduct a comprehensive self-examination and rectification to completely clean up illegal content".

The government condemned Marriott in a statement that accused the company of having "seriously violated China's relevant laws and regulations and hurt the feelings of the Chinese people", CNN reported.

US hotel chain Marriott's chief executive officer (CEO) apologized Thursday for listing Tibet, among other parts of China, as an independent country in a mail questionnaire, and promised to take measures to prevent such incidents.

The Chinese government on Friday demanded public apologies from Spanish fast-fashion retailer Zara, U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines and Irish medical device company Medtronic, after they singled out Taiwan as a separate country on their websites.

Taiwan, which calls itself the Republic of China, and goes under various names in worldwide organizations, has been self-ruled since 1949 in defiance of the Communist regime in the PRC.

China, emboldened by its growing economic and geopolitical influence, is showing less tolerance of what it sees as violations of its political bottom line by foreign companies.

"Boycott Marriott! Get out of China!" one Weibo user said.

Marriott suspended the questionnaire and apologized.

The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) is one of two autonomous provinces in China, while Hong Kong and Macau are designated as special administrative regions.

He also assured listeners that the U.S. will continue to be a country of immigrants and that the ongoing review of visas, including the H-1B category, was only for "refinements".

Anger over Marriott's mistake snowballed after it was posted on the Communist Youth League's official account on Weibo, China's popular Twitter-like platform. "We recognize the severity of the situation and sincerely apologize", Sorenson said in a statement.

Former colonies of the United Kingdom and Portugal respectively, Hong Kong and Macau are Special Administrative Regions of China.

Marriott issued a swift apology to the Chinese government and said that the company doesn't support separatist movements.

Authorities in Beijing began an investigation yesterday into the language used by the American multinational company in a questionnaire sent to customers by email.
