Gillian Anderson Confirms She's Exiting Fox's 'The X-Files,' Starz's 'American Gods'

Anderson - who plays co-lead Dana Scully - confirmed late past year that the 11th outing would be her "last".

Anderson had previously teased that she wasn't planning on returning to "The X-Files" if the series continued past season 11, which just debuted last week, but now she's officially calling it quits on a character she first originated all the way back in 1993.

Actress Gillian Anderson, who has played Scully throughout its on-again, off-again run starting in 1993, told reporters at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that she was finished playing the iconic Federal Bureau of Investigation agent. The actress said multiple times past year that the now airing eleventh season would be her last, and reiterated her position at the TCAs, saying definitively, "It's time for me to hang up Scully's hat".

She told TV Guide magazine: "I've said from the beginning this is it for me".

The Golden Globe-winning actress revealed that she actually arrived at the decision to leave the series before filming the show's six-episode Season 10, which aired last 2016. I thought that the previous six was going to be it. "I think as [series creator] Chris [Carter] has said himself, that short stack of episodes felt like we were learning how to walk again and that this season of 10 feels like the pace is up and we're running".

"There's lots of things I want to do in my life and my career", she said. She also confirmed that she's walking away from Starz drama American Gods after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green quit the series.

A twelfth season for The X-Files hasn't yet been announced, though the network is probably waiting to see how viewership shakes out before making the commitment. Her co-star, David "Fox Mulder" Duchovny, posted a sweet message on Twitter. I am hugely grateful, but there's lots of other stuff I want to do and I don't really want to be tied down to months and months of doing any particular one thing that I feel like I've done. With this section of the monster-of-the-week Federal Bureau of Investigation show in its second season (eleventh overall), one of its stars is done for good - and has opened up as to why.
