National Parks will remain open with limited access during government shutdown


While some outdoor areas at national parks will remain accessible to visitors during the government shutdown, and some visitor centers operated by private entities remain open, National Park employees are furloughed and some buildings are closed.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, announced that Yosemite would be open regardless of the looming shutdown, reported The Sacramento Bee. The park's independently operated businesses, however, remained open, including the Majestic Yosemite Hotel - formerly the Ahwahnee - and the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, as well as the valley's various restaurants, gift shops and stores.

The visitors center is closed, along with some restrooms because there's nobody to clean them.

Ranger-led snowshoe hikes will not be available.

Elsewhere, Yellowstone National Park remained opened, but across the country in NY, the nation's most famous monuments to immigration - the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island - were closed.

City officials reiterated Friday a potential shutdown would have no effect on city trash collection, traffic monitoring, first responders and public safety activities.
