The controversial lawman whom Donald Trump pardoned past year following a federal conviction for criminal contempt in a racial profiling case.

The former sheriff is 85 years old and would be one of the oldest ever first term Senators in congressional history.

"I'm going to have to work hard; you don't take anything for granted", the tough-talking lawman told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday.

Famous for embracing the title of "America's Toughest Sheriff", Arpaio was convicted by a federal judge after the Maricopa lawman's defied an order to stop detaining immigrants simply due to their legal status.

The source said the objective of the meeting is to show that Trump is actually working with Democrats on the issue. Democrats said their top priority is protecting 800,000 younger undocumented immigrants from deportation.

A longtime supporter of President Trump, Arpaio was pardoned last summer by Trump after he was found guilty of criminal contempt. "But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win".

Former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who past year was pardoned by President Trump in a case stemming from his immigration enforcement tactics, announced Tuesday he will run for the open Senate seat in his home state.
