Trump cancels United Kingdom trip over 'bad deal' embassy

US President Donald Trump says he has cancelled his trip to London because of a "bad deal" over the relocation of the American embassy.

Trump claimed he had scrapped the visit because he didn't want to open the new United States embassy in the British capital, but Khan suggested the real reason was because he wouldn't be welcome.

The ceremony may instead be hosted by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, sources in the US government suggested.

Even Prime Minister Theresa May has clashed with Trump after he re-tweeted anti-Muslim propaganda from a far right British party.

In fact, US diplomats had discussed relocating the USA embassy from Mayfair, in central London, as far back as 2003 amid concerns that the property was not sufficiently equipped to handle new security threats.

Trump Gleeful on Poll's Record-High Numbers for Economic Optimism
White voters with no college degree are divided, with 41 percent approving of the tax plan and 38 percent disapproving. Trump signed off on the plan in December, calling it a "gift" to the middle class-but not all see it that way.

Relations between the US and its closest ally have been repeatedly strained since Trump took office a year ago and U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May became the first foreign leader to meet him at the White House.

"I mean what a coup for Emmanuel Macron [the French president] to get Trump on Bastille Day of all days".

Here are some things to know about the new building, which opens to the public on January 16.

This development is particularly shocking because Obama hadn't been elected when the decision was made to move the embassy from Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms.

Last month, the White House said it would announce details "soon" of Mr Trump's proposed visit to the UK.

Tunisia arrests 237 after clashes and protests
Tunisia has experienced a relatively smooth transition to democracy since the 2011 uprising that toppled dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a vocal critic of Trump, said Friday that the President "got the message from the many Londoners who love America and Americans but find his policies and action the polar opposite of our city's values".

But on Thursday, reports began circulating that the visit had been canceled due to protest fears.

The short visit by Trump in February was not the full State Visit proposed by British Prime Minister Theresa May on the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II, for which no date has yet been set.

Political observers noted that the move could also be motivated by the possibility of demonstrators protesting Trump's visit.

Trump said the building cost $1.2 billion (990 million euros) - a price tag that reportedly makes it the most expensive embassy building in the world.
