According to publicly disclosed donations, Gates has given away 700 million shares of Microsoft - worth almost $62 billion at today's value - and close to $3 billion in cash over the years.

Amazon has delivered a big prize to its CEO Jeff Bezos, who is now the richest person on Earth.

Jeff Bezos's net worth reached $105.1 billion Monday on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as Amazon.com Inc. shares added to a 12-month surge that's lifted the online shopping giant's market value by nearly 57 percent. According to CNN, he owns 78.9 million shares of Amazon. Forbes also put Bezos at the head of the uber-rich class, but cited his net worth at $104.4 billion. "Over the last month our research at GBH has indicated Amazon has dominated e-commerce sales, with our estimates indicating the company captured between 45% to 50% of all holiday online retail sales vs. 38% during this holiday sales period in 2016", Daniel Ives, technical research analyst at GBH research, wrote in a recent note.

Bezos also controls closely held space exploration business Blue Origin and the Washington Post. But Forbes reports that Gates' net worth crossed above $100 billion briefly back in April 1999. Gates is now the second richest person in the world, with a net worth of $93 billion.
