The number of Facebook users in their teens is expected to drop by 5.6 percent, whereas the users from 18 to 24 are expected to decrease 5.8 percent.

In a report on the future of Facebook's USA audience, the research firm eMarketer estimates that the platform will lose 2 million users ages 24 and younger this year.

EMarketer, who ran Facebook's user numbers for 2017, predicts that it's not going to get much better for the social media giant in 2018.

In a report on Monday, eMarketer said about 71% of the United Kingdom users between 12 and 17 years old would use Facebook this year, a drop of 8% from last year's forecast.

Facebook is still adding monthly users but older age groups are mainly responsible for this.

Facebook is still growing, it said, and will reach 169.5 million US users this year, which is growth of just under 1 per cent year-on-year. In August, the research firm predicted that in 2017 the 12 to 17 age group would decline 3.4%. The overall audience for Instagram is bigger than Snapchat in the U.S. The number of Instagram users will grow 13.1% to 104.7 million in 2018, while Snapchat's user base will increase 9.3% to 86.5 million, eMarketer forecast. The research firm estimates that another 2.1 million users in the US younger than 25 will leave Facebook this year.

And the trend is not limited to teens, as overall Facebook is expected to lose 2 million users who are 24 or younger this year, according to eMarketer. Meanwhile, Facebook is failing to add new things to draw young people in.

That's even better than Snapchat's expected growth - eMarketer believes it will grow its USA audience by 9 percent in 2018. There were roughly 12.1 million U.S. Facebook users in the 12- to 17-year-old demographic by the end of the year. Not all of those users are migrating to Instagram, also owned by Facebook.
