Both the bye polls have been necessitated following resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur seat and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya from Phulpur Lok Sabha seats after their elections to State Legislative Council.

The results for both states will be declared on March 14. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have extended their support to the SP candidate. On the same day, the by-election for Bihar's Lok Sabha Araria seat and two assembly seats -Jehanabad and Bhabua- are also being held.

Maurya exuded confidence that the BJP would sweep the ongoing bypolls. The state has suffered the negative consequences because of this. BJP is not anxious even if the Congress also joins this unholy alliance. "There is anger among people against Nitish Kumar-led government here because they feel that the mandate they gave in 2015 was violated". "Bypolls will be a positive referendum on my one year of governance", the chief minister said.

In Bihar, it is the first electoral test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he walked out of the "grand alliance" previous year and teamed up with the BJP. Prior to Yogi Adityanath, the seat was thrice represented in Parliament by his mentor Yogi Avaidyanath.
