Profile: Mike Pompeo, Trump's new pick for U.S. secretary of state

Pompeo, the outgoing Central Intelligence Agency chief, will bring a new, blunt-speaking style to the job of secretary of state, strikingly different from Rex Tillerson's understated approach. But perhaps more damagingly to his relationship with Mr Trump, who prizes loyalty above all, Mr Tillerson also distanced himself from the president's equivocating remarks on the white supremacists who protested in Charlottesville last August.

"Many important positions in Government are unfilled because of this obstruction". Unlike Tillerson, Pompeo shares Trump's hawkish approach to foreign policy, particularly in handling the Iran issue.

He was widely disliked inside his own agency.

It was Navarro who was the most vocal advocate of slapping tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into the United States, a measure ostensibly created to hit back at Chinese protectionism but whose actual effect would be to fall most heavily on Canada and other US allies.

In filling out the ranks of senior staff at Foggy Bottom, Pompeo has one big advantage over Tillerson: a congenial relationship with the president.

In all 91 senior positions at the State Department remain unfilled after more than a year of the Trump administration, including that of ambassador to key ally South Korea.

Toys R Us , once the country's preeminent toy retailer, has been unable to keep up with big-box and online competitors. The company said some buyers were interested in purchasing Toys R Us , but the company didn't receive any formal bids.

"Tillerson's ouster is a sign of continued turbulence in US foreign policy", said Jessica Chen Weiss, a Cornell University professor.

As I reported in November, Pompeo has been quietly preparing to take over the State Department for months.

Tillerson had been scheduled to testify Thursday before the Foreign Relations panel on the fiscal 2019 budget request as well as his reorganization plans, but that hearing was postponed.

While some opponents lambasted the former Kansas lawmaker for his posturing on a House panel that investigated Hillary Clinton and the 2012 Benghazi attack, some Democrats held out hope he could lead a State Department turnaround.

Rex Tillerson's firing comes as the USA secretary of state ended an African tour focused on security. Ms Haspel is a career spy, with more than three decades experience at the agency.

If he is confirmed by Congress, Mr. Pompeo's internal credibility, bureaucratic savvy and congressional ties could make him more effective than his predecessor.

They could have had a second just minutes later when Mustafa Pektemek's shot from close range was deflected behind by Alaba . But he lasted just 35 minutes before being substituted.

Pompeo and Tillerson navigated different paths with Trump, too.

THE QUOTE: "Over and above the reflection of chaos within the USA administration, the removal of another balancing voice in the White House shortly after ex-economic adviser Gary Cohn's departure certainly induced jitters within the market", said Jingyi Pan, market strategist at IG in Singapore.

However, with the Trump administration's high turnover, China may not expect Pompeo to last the rest of Trump's term.

"President Trump is determined to prevent that from happening in North Korea", Pompeo told CBS.

In his speech, Tillerson never thanked the president, and only mentioned him once, saying, "I received a call today from the president of the United States a little after noon time from Air Force One".
