UConn overall top seed; Baylor, Texas, A&M also in women's tourney

The quartet of top seeds all have a legitimate chance to win the event, but don't count out defending champion SC, who is a No. 2 seed in UConn's region.

In the NCAA Tournament's new Selection Show format, the teams were unveiled in alphabetical order, which meant Notre Dame had to sit through half the show awaiting their name to be called.

Wilson and the Gamecocks face a hard path in front of them as they attempt to defend last year's NCAA title. It was that kind of night.

The Albany regional will likely be the most stacked of the bunch, and the fact that either SC or UConn will be out heading into the Final Four is an interesting wrinkle-and allows for better odds that a new team might take home the title this year. Last season, UConn came into the NCAAs as the overwhelming favorite before their 111-game winning streak ended with a loss to Mississippi State in the Final Four. The Gamecocks are the No. 2 seed.

The Irish are in the Spokane Regional and open up against Cal State Northridge on Friday.

OR coach Kelly Graves is very familiar with Spokane, having coached Gonzaga from 2000-1014, leading the Zags to a regional final in 2012.

Closing out the bracket is the Lexington Region, which features ACC champion Louisville as the top seed. Looming as a potential Sweet 16 matchup is No. 3 seed Ohio State, which features senior prospects Kelsey Mitchell and Stephanie Mavunga. The SEC has seven teams in the tournament, and the Pac-12 has six. Following the Cardinals are three teams that have won the NCAA Tournament: No. 2 seed Baylor, No. 3 seed Tennessee and No. 4 seed Stanford, with Baylor and Tennessee each hoisting the trophy twice in the past 13 years.

Stanford potentially is headed to Lexington for the third straight year if it can advance. That streak was snapped when they were defeated by SC, but that doesn't make what Mississippi State's women have done this year any less remarkable-and the seed reflects that. "The growth of our program at this time past year, we were hoping to have done enough to get in". Meanwhile Rutgers was left out despite five wins against top-50 teams and two more against Purdue, ranked 62nd.

"We spent nearly seven hours on that decision of who those last four teams in and first four out were", NCAA women's basketball committee chair Rhonda Bennett said.
