That comprises retail stores, offices, data centers and co-located facilities in 43 countries, and is up from 96 percent reported a year ago. Since 2014, all of Apple's data centres have also been powered by renewable energy.

Apple noted that it now has 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, with 15 more in construction.

The government has earmarked $230 million to promote the use of renewable energy, particularly in off-grid communities across the country. The projects include wind farms, solar arrays, biogas fuel cells, micro-hydro generation systems, and energy storage technologies.

"We do want to get to a point where renewables and other carbon-free energy sources actually power our operations every hour of every day", Holzle said in Google's blog post.

Because Apple is working with partners and utilities on wide-ranging renewable projects, new energy options are emerging for communities and countries worldwide.

Crews have already begun construction, and Bridgeport Mayor David Hughes says the town is already seeing an economic boom. Work already has been going on for weeks at the location, which includes the site of the old Widows Creek power plant.

Apple has hit its target of powering all its facilities with renewable energy, in the latest sign of an industry-wide shift towards clean power.

Since it is not yet possible to power a company the size of Google entirely by renewable energy, the search giant has chose to "match" its energy usage by purchasing renewable energy from local wind and solar farms.

Apple Park in Cupertino is now the largest LEED Platinum-certified office building in North America powered fully by renewable energy.

Third-party suppliers committing to use clean energy for Apple production include two polymer makers, European soft goods supplier ECCO Leather, China-based iPhone manufacturer Pegatron, and Taiwanese Mac manufacturer Quanta Computer.

Google has enough contracts to purchase three gigawatts of renewable energy output.

However, "our response will be stronger than what they imagine, and they will receive it (the response) within a week", he said. According to Reuters, Rouhani also said on Monday that Iran's missile capabilities were purely defensive.

The software company now has 25 working global projects.

It's an expensive process to embark on, too: Apple has deals with providers all around the world, and has to work around local limitations such as physical space, weather, and more.

The company said it has 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totaling 626 megawatts of generation capacity. Apple is also urging suppliers to follow its lead.

There is a long way to go. This would see Apple making new products exclusively out of recycled parts.
