Farm Recalls 200M Eggs Over Salmonella Concerns; 22 Report Illnesses

- Hundreds of millions of eggs are being voluntarily recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

The eggs from the Hyde County farm reached consumers in 10 states, including New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

They were sold under the brand names Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms, Glenview and Great Value; and at Walmart and Food Lion stores.

The FDA said the illnesses prompted an inspection of the Hyde County farm, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day.

Salmonella is particularly harmful to the elderly and young children, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

"Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them", FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a tweet.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak led to the massive recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa farms. Approximately 206,749,248 eggs are being recalled. The eggs were sold through retail stores and to restaurants via direct delivery.

The illnesses were reported in states on the U.S. East Coast, leading the FDA to conduct extensive interviews. It is generally contracted from contaminated poultry, meat, eggs and water, and affects the intestinal tract. The FDA has since inspected the farm.
