Greitens Wants Attorney General To Drop Investigation

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Hawley said his office found evidence Greitens used an electronic donor list for political fundraising.

- Eric Greitens (@EricGreitens) April 18, 2018Greitens has been under growing pressure to resign since the Missouri House of Representatives released a report last week detailing allegations that he coerced a woman into sex and then blackmailed her with a photo he took without her consent. Hawley announced on Tuesday that his office had evidence that Greitens illegally obtained that fundraising list.

The attorney general noted, however, that his office lacks jurisdiction to bring such a case, requiring him to refer the matter instead to the local prosecutor where the alleged misconduct took place, in this instance St. Louis.

The scandal grew when a St. Louis grand jury indicted Greitens in February on a felony invasion-of-privacy charge for allegedly taking a nonconsensual photograph of the woman while she was partially nude.

Luckily for Josh, he'therefore better at press conferences than regulation.

A growing number of Missouri elected officials have called on Greitens to step down over allegations of unwanted sexual aggression against a woman with whom he has said he had a consensual extramarital affair in 2015.

The JIT decided not to include in its investigation the Arena company, Zia informed the court during his cross-examination. The petitioner said PEMRA did not block these hateful and ridiculing remarks passed against the judiciary.

Greitens has denied any criminal wrongdoing and says allegations of violence or sexual assault are false.

"This provision can be read a couple of different ways, kind of depending upon how you construct that sentence, which I think is going to lead to a legal argument about whether or not this is an impeachable offense under the constitution", said Steve Gaw, an attorney and former Missouri House speaker who served on the state's last impeachment panel.

In a statement provided to TPM, Gardner's office said they are "reviewing the evidence" but "can't discuss any specifics at this time, as the investigation is ongoing". "If Greitens continues to stubbornly cling to power, the House must immediately act to initiate his ultimate removal from office".

"And he did all of this without permission of the Mission Continues", Hawley said Tuesday.

"That can be subject to a lot of interpretation", said Connie Murray, a Republican and retired attorney who served on the 1994 legislative impeachment panel. Hawley said Greitens obtained a list of donors, used the list and transmitted the list without the donors permission. (Worth noting: The AP first broke the story of Greitens' apparent misuse of the Mission Continues' donor list in October 2016.) A fellow outsider and fellow Republican who swept into office with Greitens in November 2016, Hawley faced derision for clearing the governor's office for its use of the Confide messaging app after an investigation that seemed cursory at best.

"The standards for impeachment say a crime is grounds for impeachment".

Hawley said Tuesday that it's up to the St. Louis prosecutor to decide whether to charge Greitens with a crime.

A spokeswoman says a request for the Missouri attorney general's office to recuse itself from investigating a charity founded by Republican Gov. Eric Greitens is "frivolous". Greitens had raised $2 million from donors who had also given generously to The Mission Continues, the AP reported, but he denied using a donor list to solicit any money.

The Mission Continues, which Greitens co-founded in 2007, helps veterans transition back into civilian life by placing them in volunteer roles with community organizations.

Hawley announced an investigation into The Mission Continues charity last month with a focus on Missouri's charitable giving laws.

On Tuesday, the top Republican lawmakers in both chambers of the state legislature issued statements calling on Greitens to resign.

Hawley has also provided the evidence to the House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight.
