The most popular videos on the internet were defaced and removed from YouTube earlier today in what appears to be a cyberattack. And today, their account was hacked by a duo going by the names Prosox and Kuroi'sh.

Update 4/10/18 10:45 AM ET: Vevo has confirmed to Engadget that a "security breach" affected a number of videos, and that it's continuing to look into the cause. Music videos for other major artists including Calvin Harris, Katy Perry, Shakira, Drake, Selena Gomez and more also had their titles changed to say that they were "Hacked by Prosox" with thumbnails being changed too.

Vevo is a joint venture between three of the music industry's biggest record labels, Universal, Sony and Warner, with music videos by its artists syndicated on YouTube.

A large number of high-profile music videos have been defaced on Youtube; which has now fallen victim to potential hackers. In the case of "Despacito", the video's description was altered, as was its thumbnail image (which was changed to a picture of a masked, gun-wielding gang from Netflix's Casa De Papel).

Among the videos affected was "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi, which is now the most-watched YouTube video of all time, with more than five billion views. The video disappeared just five days after it had surpassed 5 billion views.

Speaking with the BBC, YouTube stated that "After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue".
