Harvey, Irma, Maria, Nate won't be seen again


When a storm name is retired from the Atlantic's list of names, member countries of the meteorological organisation from that region select a new name. Nate eventually raced north into the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in Louisiana at the Mouth of the Mississippi River and again along coastal Mississippi.

Maria ravaged the island of Dominica as a category 5 on September 19, and later devastated Puerto Rico as a high-end category 4 hurricane.

The World Meteorological Organization, the worldwide body responsible for naming hurricanes, says it will no longer use Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate to name hurricanes. When it hit Puerto Rico, it was still a Category 4, and the strongest storm to hit the USA territory since 1928. Otherwise, names are reused on a six-year cycle.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association estimates that the damage caused by Maria places it at No. 3 - right behind Harvey and Katrina.

As The Washington Post reported, hurricane names started to be retired after the 1954 hurricane season, when three devastating storms hit the East Coast.

Hurricane Harvey killed 68 people in Texas alone and dumped historic amounts of rain on the city of Houston. Taking their place will be Harold, Idalia, Margot, and Nigel respectively. In 2005, five storm names, including Katrina, were retired - the most for a single season.

The Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, a measure that takes into account both the strength and duration of the season's tropical storms and hurricanes, was about 241% of the long-term average and the seventh highest in the Atlantic historical record back to 1851, according to the RSMC Miami report.

Hurricanes season runs from June 1 to November 30.
