Knicks Fire Jeff Hornacek, Kurt Rambis

The New York Knicks fired head coach Jeff Hornacek, multiple sources confirmed to The Washington Post. Van Gundy's run was the Knicks' most recent period of sustained success; NY has won just one playoff series since Van Gundy left early in the 2000-01 season. The Knicks now have a chance to try their luck in the free market with a brand new head coach and try to end their playoff drought. While he's spent his time working as an analyst, rumors of him clashing with management in Oakland seems to be a reason why he hasn't been able to secure another head coaching job in the National Basketball Association.

Jackson's only three seasons of coaching experience came with the Warriors, who he guided from a 23-43 record in his first year to a 51-31 record in his third year. The combination hindered the Knicks all season, as NY finished 2016-17 ranked 18th in offensive rating.

He also has connections to the Knicks, having been drafted by them in 1987 and playing for them from 1987-1992 and 2001-2002. That has been invaluable experience for him, and he, along with David Fizdale, David Blatt, and Mark Jackson, are candidates for the Knicks job.

Hornacek was hired in 2016 by Phil Jackson and lasted just one more season after Jackson and the team parted ways last summer. He's also had success as a head coach, leading the New Orleans Pelicans to two playoff appearances in five years before being fired in 2015. The Knicks are determined to stay on the course of drafting and player development as they await the return of their All-Star center Kristaps Porzingis, who is recovering from a torn ACL and isn't expected to return until midway through next season.

Blatt coached the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA Finals appearance, but he was sacked in the middle of the following season for what then-GM David Griffin said was "a lack of fit with our personnel and our vision".
