Sensex Struggles After 4 Days Of Gains, Nifty Below 10400

Global oil prices remained elevated, after steep gains in the previous session.

The broader NSE Nifty also ended above the key 10,400-mark.

Optimism about the upcoming earnings season also supported markets.

The gauge had gained 861.18 points in the previous four sessions.

Around 9.16 a.m., the wider Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) inched up by 12.45 points or 0.12 per cent to trade at 10,414.70 points.

Persistent capital inflows by domestic institutional investors and retail investors kept the market in fine nick, analysts said.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 1300.93 crore while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 359.35 crore on Monday, a provisional data showed. The Street has been consolidating on the positive sentiment of investors since mid last week and the Sensex has gained more than 1,000 points in the period.

On the other hand, Tata Motors (1.37%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.02%), Hero Motocorp (1.01%) and HDFC Bank (1%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex. Metal stocks maintained their recent upward momentum with Vedanta, Tata Steel and Hindalco were up between 1 per cent and 2 per cent.

In the broader markets, mid-cap index firmed up by 0.18 per cent, but small-cap index succumbed to profit-booking and shed 0.02 per cent.

The BSE Sensex turned choppy and fell over 100 points, led by losses on banking, oil & gas, finance and auto counters, amid mixed Asian cues.

Sectoral indices rise up by 1.80 percent. In Europe, France's Paris CAC was up 0.66 per cent, while Frankfurt's DAX gained 1 per cent in their early deals.

Civilian killed, three security personnel injured in J&K encounter
