Trump predicts China will open its markets

The president made fixing the trade imbalance with China a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, where he frequently used incendiary language to describe how Beijing would "rape" the USA economically.

"China will take down its trade barriers because it is the right thing to do", Trump said in a tweet. The move was related to China's alleged theft of USA intellectual property.

"President Xi and I will always be friends, no matter what happens with our dispute on trade", Trump wrote.

Trade war anxieties were back on the front burner after President Donald Trump threatened late Thursday to impose tariffs on an additional $100 billion in Chinese goods, provoking strong criticism from Beijing.

Xi set out his defence of globalisation at the real World Economic Forum in Davos a year ago (2017) just days before Trump took office promising to protect the U.S. from "other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs".

Trump hasn't explained why, amid a week of economic saber-rattling between the two countries that shook global markets, he feels confident a deal can be made. The U.S. sold about $130 billion in goods to China in 2017 and faces a potentially devastating hit to its market there if China responds in kind.

The win under the floodlights was the 49th of Vettel's grand prix career and an unprecedented fourth at the Sakhir desert circuit. Traffic stifled the Haas driver's charge, allowing Gasly to retain the position when he pitted two laps later.

Responding to a question on the Dow in NY dropping by over 500 points, Sanders said, "We know that there could be some fluctuation". They calmed down Wednesday and Thursday on hopes the USA and China would find a diplomatic solution but slid Friday after Beijing said it would fight the Trump administration's latest threats.

This is in addition to the proposed 25 per cent import tariffs worth Dollars 50 billion on some 1,300 Chinese products being imported into the US.

Trump hit back again late Thursday by instructing trade officials to consider tariffs on an additional $100 billion in imports.

But Trump's newly-installed economic adviser Larry Kudlow tried to downplay those concerns, saying the USA is "not running a trade war".

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said last Tuesday (April 3) that Xi's keynote speech would be "the most authoritative interpretation" of the new measures planned to mark the 40th anniversary of China's move towards economic liberalisation.

But he also downplayed the tariff threat as "part of the process" and said he was hopeful that China would enter negotiations.

That would be costly for China , but President Xi Jinping has already said he's willing to do whatever it takes to win this thing. Asia markets - hammered along with global equities by the trade row in recent weeks - rallied on the speech Tuesday.

But Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro sent a tougher message later Sunday, claiming the West Wing is "proceeding in a measured way" as negotiations with China continue. "China's behavior, it's 20 years now, it's more than unfair trade practices".

Another adviser, Peter Navarro, told NBC's "Meet the Press" that while "there are discussions" with the Chinese, the United States is moving forward on tariffs and investment restrictions against Beijing. In a separate interview on "Fox News Sunday", Kudlow acknowledged "jitters" but insisted "we're not gonna to end up in a trade war".

Further escalation could be in the offing. We want them to stop stealing our stuff.

For Trump, the dispute runs the risk of blunting the economic benefits of his tax overhaul, which is at the center of congressional Republicans' case for voters to keep them in power in the 2018 elections.

U.S. businesses and farm states most vulnerable to Chinese retaliation have called for restraint.
