Apple now has more than 50 autonomous cars on the road

This is pretty much what all its rivals have been doing as well, but in Apple's case the brand may never progress to the point where it'll be building its own self-driving electric vehicle.

Apple hasn't really detailed its plans for the self-driving project that it has got going on but the company is steadily increasing the number of resources that it has chose to this project.

Apple has 55 permits that allow it to test self-driving cars on California roads, finishing second behind General Motors' Cruise division, which has 104 permits.

The company's fleet is growing faster than a hipster's beard; from three in April 2017 to 45 in March this year, and now 55 (which we assume are programmed to constantly remind their flannel-shirted occupants how cool, hip and trendy they're being). In May, Apple got permits for 10 more self-driving vehicles, according to Mac Reports.

Apple, however, has not yet received a permit to test self-driving cars without a driver behind the wheel.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But building an entire self-driving vehicle fleet from the ground up proved too hard. Next in the list followed by Tesla (39 vehicles), Drive.Ai (14 cars) and Zoox Inc (12 cars).

Apple still hasn't publicly announced its plans when it comes to autonomous cars.
