David Goodall ends his life by euthanasia

Australia's oldest scientist has died after flying to Switzerland to end his life by assisted suicide.

Goodall ate a final meal of fish and chips and cheesecake before dying.

Professor Goodall took his own life on Thursday at a clinic near Basel, to the strains of Beethoven's final symphony and surrounded by family.

In Goodall's case that meant he had himself to open the valve that allowed the short-acting barbiturate to mix with a saline solution and flow into his vein. The best-known group to help foreigners end their days in the Alpine country is Dignitas, but others include Life Circle in Basel, Goodall's choice.

Born in London in April 1914, just months before the outbreak of World War I, Goodall and his family moved to Australia when he was a child.

Goodall ended his life at a Swiss clinic by administering a lethal drug under the guidance of doctors, according to a spokesperson for the pro-euthanasia group Exit International, CNN reported.

The story adds, "Mr. Goodall said, 'I've had a good life.' He was not afraid of death but acknowledged that he previously tried to end his life in Australia". He wished to have no funeral, remembrance service or ceremony, since he had "no belief in the afterlife".

Voluntary euthanasia has been legal in Switzerland since the 1940s but is illegal in Australia.

During his last press conference Wednesday, he explained his reasons for his big decision.

The scientist came to Switzerland especially for the sake of procedure of euthanasia, which is banned in Australia.
