A student and an adult chaperone were killed and 45 others were injured after a school bus collided with a dump truck on a New Jersey highway Thursday morning. "It's a horrific scene", Greenbaum said.

The two buses that were not involved in the crash were returned to the school and the students were reconnected with their families and dismissed, said Holly Tedesco, Paramus Council president and police commissioner.

A red dump truck with a mangled front end was parked along the highway nearby, about 50 miles west of NY. A "No Turns" sign is posted near the paved area between an opening in two metal guardrails.

Forty-five people, including 38 students, were on the bus at the time. The dump truck driver's condition was not immediately clear.

The bus was transporting students from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, according to a school official. The other buses made it to the site but returned to the school about 50 miles (80 kilometers) away.

The crash completely ripped off the undercarriage of the bus and left it lying demolished with parts spread out along the highway, in the median of Route 80 in Mount Olive Township. Some of the victims crawled out of the emergency exit in the back of the bus and an escape hatch on the roof.

Donald Lazorchek, who was picking up his son James, said the news was "shocking, very shocking", and he kept "hoping it wasn't my son".

An 11-year-old boy sitting in the fourth row of the bus told News 4, "I heard like a scraping noise and then the bus tilted over, and a lot of people were screaming".

"My heart just dropped".

"It's like nothing you've ever seen before", he said.

All evening school activities are cancelled for this evening and tomorrow evening.

The students, fifth graders at East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, were on their way to a field trip when the collision occurred, Murphy told a news conference from the school.

"Everybody's trying to make sense of this", Murphy said. Emblazoned on the back of the truck: "In God we trust".
