The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw was less receptive to the film, saying: "It's an entertaining spectacle but the brilliant tonal balance in something like Jordan Peele's satire Get Out leaves this looking a little exposed".

Pre-production on the film began as events in Charlottesville took place previous year and Peele said the timing couldn't be any more "urgent" for this story to be told.

The renowned filmmaker's provocative project, which the teaser assures is "based upon some fo' real, fo' real s-", tells the remarkable true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), who became Colorado Springs' first black detective in the early 1970s.

Set in the early 1970s, the film follows Stallworth (played by John David Washington of HBO's "Ballers") as he tries to make his mark on the force by undertaking a unsafe mission to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.

The audience broke out in applause a half-dozen times during the film's Monday night premiere, followed by four minutes of applause during the credits and a six-minute standing ovation.
