Martial, Payet, Lacazette & Coman out of France squad

France have been drawn in Group C along with Australia, Peru and Denmark.

Deschamps has a wealth of attacking options despite the omissions of Lacazette and Martial, with Chelsea's Olivier Giroud competing with the likes of Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann, PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele for selection in Russian Federation. "Two years have passed, I've stuck with the players who responded to my trust".

Arsenal striker Lacazette is also a surprise omission for Les Blues, after the former Lyon forward hit a rich vein of form towards the end of the season with the Gunners. He is the French league's top playmaker this season with 13 assists, and claimed three goals and seven assists in the Europa League, starring in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

"He was a serious candidate for a place in the 23 but for this kind of injury it's usually three weeks of recovery", Deschamps said.

United boss Jose Mourinho, however, has ben reluctant to let the 22-year-old off the leash so to speak and over the course of the campaign he has made just 18 Premier League starts.

Lacazatte was impressed in a 2-2 score draw against Germany in last November friendlies while Martial won 18 caps and started France's 3-1 friendly victory over Russian Federation in March and Marseille's former West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet has also been omitted.

"It always seems impossible until it's done", wrote Mendy on Twitter.

Although the severity of his injury is yet to be confirmed, doubts over his fitness and the availability of other players has seen Deschamps leave him at home.

N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) and Paul Pogba (Manchester United) complete the Premier League contingent in the French squad, while Kurt Zouma (Chelsea), Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace) and Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham) were named on the reserve list.

Another striker, Payet's team-mate Florian Thauvin, who has excelled in the south of France after an unhappy spell at Newcastle, will also go to Russian Federation.

Karim Benzema (1st R) of France celebrates scoring his team's fourth goal with his teammates during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Group E match between Switzerland and France at Arena Fonte Nova on June 20, 2014 in Salvador, Brazil.
