Modi-Putin informal summit: Global terrorism likely to be discussed

The Sochi Summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin next week could unveil a new chapter in bilateral trade relations, India's apex trade group Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) said on Thursday.

"This stability is a wide door opened for the political process", Assad told Putin, according to the report.

The Russian president said the terrorists have laid down their arms in key locations in Syria, allowing for the restoration of Syrian infrastructure.

The latest round of Syria peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana wrapped up on Tuesday, but did not however make any concrete progress towards ending the seven-year conflict that has cost 350,000 lives.

The informal summit between the two leaders, which, has a broad-based agenda on global and regional issues, is expected to see the discussions on global terrorism, situation in Afghanistan-Pakistan, Syria, Islamic State (IS), the sources added.

"After the military success (of the Syrian army in recent months) supplementary conditions have been created which favour the start of a political process on a major scale", Mr Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin following the meeting in the southern Russian city of Sochi. The two leaders would hold free-wheeling discussions on bilateral issues as well as global developments.

The visit comes on the eve of a meeting in Sochi between Mr Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the first face-to-face talk of the year between the veteran leaders.
