A recently expelled student in IL is in custody after he opened fire near the gym of his former school, where seniors at Dixon High were gathered for graduation practice, at around 8am Wednesday. The suspect fired at the officer, who shot back, injuring the gunman.
Lockdown has been lifted at the other schools in the city about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Chicago.
ABC7 reports that Dallas was the resource officer and the alleged gunman was "19-year-old Matt Milby", a former student. The suspect then ran away and fired a shot at the pursuing officer, according to the police chief, who added that the officer returned fire and wounded the suspect. He was taken into custody and treated for his wound, which city officials said was not life-threatening.
A student at the school, Brianna Johnson, 19, told Sauk Valley that she saw Milby peeking through a window inside the school's gym, armed with a long-barreled gun. Dallas called the emergency responders just after 8:00 am to inform them that shots had been fired outside the Dixon High School gymnasium.
