Almost 200 people gathered in Raleigh to participate in the Poor People's Campaign, a national effort involving 30 other locations that calls for six weeks of nonviolent direct action.

Police say what was suppose to be a peaceful protest turn unlawful Monday evening when authorities say protesters moved into the streets.

The actor-turned-activist spoke at the Capitol steps Monday afternoon about the problems facing impoverished America as part of the Poor People's Campaign, a six-week series of protests across the country aimed at creating a "moral revival". Those protests were meant to oppose the Republican-dominated legislature's agenda, its cuts in unemployment benefits, opposition to expanding Medicaid, and restrictive voting rights laws.

Officers cited 10 protesters at the Iowa Capitol who gathered in and around the staff offices of Gov. Kim Reynolds when they refused to leave the building at the close of business hours.

"No justice, no peace" were among the chants that came from what police estimated were 50 protesters. The effort will culminate with a march in Washington D.C. on June 23.

At issue are several policies they believe are heartless, if not cruel, to poor people.

The movement's broad demands to lawmakers include "a massive overhaul of the nation's voting rights laws", an end to systemic racism and support for a "living" wage, according to a release.
