Rise in mental health referrals by schools

There has been a 10-fold increase in the number of young people being referred by Northamptonshire schools for mental health treatment in the past four years, with more than half of referrals made concerning primary school children.

Westwood Behavioral Health Center offers a variety of supportive services including individual and group counseling, case management services, crisis intervention services; addiction treatment programs, children's treatment programming; family and couples counseling, psychiatric services and more!

There were 25,140 referrals in 2014-15 and 34,757 in 2017-18 - the equivalent of 183 every school day.

Almost a third (31%) of referrals from schools to CAMHS over the last three years were declined treatment as they did not meet the criteria for support.

The study, commissioned by Mental Health Foundation, looked into how stress affected over 4600 adults in the United Kingdom and found that 74% of people at one point felt that they were "overwhelmed or unable to cope". "Mentalhealth.org.uk explains that stress is not a mental health problem in itself - it is an adaptation to the situation we find ourselves in".

"Given that 40 per cent of respondents rated stigma a source of stress, this finding is alarming, and highlights the importance of early interventions and suicide prevention programs based on improving mental health literacy", they wrote.

Hannon added that one of the myths that often prevents parents from seeking treatment for their child is that they will be judged if their child has a mental health condition or as parents they did something wrong.
