This year's Cannes Film Festival has already been one of the most political in several years, with female stars protesting against industry sexism, several directors barred from attending and bans hanging over some movies.

If Kristen Stewart's barefoot trek up the stairs was meant to be a rebellion against wearing high heels on the Cannes red carpet, she wouldn't be the first actress to kick off her shoes in protest. However, there's some confusion over the Cannes dress code for women when it comes to which shoes they're allowed to wear on the red carpet. "If you don't ask guys to wear a dress and heels, you can't ask me too", said not hiding his bisexuality, the actress in an interview past year. She went on to say, "Things have to change immediately".
