Severe weather has not been a topic of discussion for 2018 thus far but as we get into early May the first round of strong storms could be moving through. The time frame to see storms begin to develop will be between 4 and 6 this evening, but strong to severe storms are possible as late as midnight. Damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are possible throughout this region today.

Ahead of the anticipated storms, agencies tweeted safety information.

While the exact detail on timing and overall intensity are still somewhat in question, it appears severe thunderstorms will be likely on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Over 25 million Americans in the central US are at risk for severe weather over the next three days and some of this severe weather could be significant. These storms will be severe with all modes of severe weather possible. An isolated tornado though can't be ruled out.

The secondary weather story just might be the weekend forecast for those celebrating Cinco De Mayo. The thunderstorms are expected to end early Friday as the cold front exits to the south and east. As the night goes on, it's going to form more into a squall line, which are those really long lines north to south that are a line of showers and thunderstorms. But that storm activity was expected to dissipate by the late morning hours.

Heavy rain is possible, especially in eastern Oklahoma.

Some of the storms could continue all day Thursday morning.

On Thursday, the threat slowly moves and expands east.

"The severe threat each day this week will largely depend on the effect of lingering clouds and thunderstorms from leftover complexes of thunderstorms the previous night", Rathbun said.
