Mahathir told a Wall Street Journal conference via a video link on Tuesday that "no deal" will be cut with Najib over the graft scandal.
"In fact, even from within the prison cell I sensed that the outrage against a corrupt regime was increasing by the day".
Anwar emerged from the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital on Wednesday after Malaysia's Pardon Board, which included the current King, chose to overturn the 2015 conviction, which is widely accepted to be politically motivated.
A royal pardon would reverse Anwar's conviction and make him eligible to actively participate in politics.
Earlier, he walked out a free man at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, and shortly after was granted an audience with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara.

1MDB is now under worldwide probes in at least six countries, including Switzerland and Singapore, over charges of money laundering and bribery.
News broke in 2015 that about $700 million allegedly stolen from 1MDB had made its way into Najib's personal bank accounts. Anwar needs to contest a by-election to become a member of Parliament before he can replace Mahathir.
