Twitter strikes deal with Disney to stream live sports content from ESPN

Twitter and the Disney-owned ESPN sports network will announce specific live shows in development this week at their NewFront presentations in NY later Monday and on Wednesday, the companies said in an emailed statement. The content agreements span both live shows and original programming, including entertainment, lifestyle, news, sports, and gaming.

ESPN, which is owned by Disney, will launch SportsCenter Live that will produce breaking sports news on Twitter.

Twitter and Disney said they plan to work closely to co-create live Twitter shows and share advertising-related revenues. And Kay Madati (pictured above), the company's head of content partnerships, described the company as "the ultimate mobile platform where video and conversation share the same screen".

"Twitter is the only place where conversation is tied to video and the biggest live moments, giving brands the unique ability to connect with leaned-in consumers who are shaping culture", said Matt Derella, Twitter's global vice president of revenue and content partnerships.

These new deals might help Twitter to complete better versus larger rivals such as Facebook that are investing as well in video and livestreaming. "In the past year, we've really expanded our efforts with the best publishers and content creators in the world to bring a slate of programming that reflects those diverse content interests".

In addition, Viacom Inc. will create new shows that include BET Breaks that will focus on the perspective of African Americans on pop culture and more. The channel has been working closely with Twitter since 2007.

The announcement come on the heels of a strong first quarter for Twitter, during which video made up more than 50 percent of its advertising revenue. Vice News, the HuffPost, Vox Media and BuzzFeed are either debuting or continuing original programs focusing on popular topics on Twitter.

MLS: MLS already has a Twitter deal for highlights, live halftime shows, and some matches, but the latest deal has the league streaming the MLS Homegrown Game and halftime show.

Also in the way of sports, F1 fans will be able to access a post-race show exclusively live on Twitter, featuring highlights, analysis and interviews.

On Monday evening Twitter also revealed plans to pair some of its top creators with brands for in-stream video partnerships.
