Microsoft describes it as the most flexible adaptive controller made by a major gaming company. A specialized controller for those unable to play video games due to mobility issues.

This is pretty impressive - Microsoft's just announced a neat new controller created to help gamers with limited mobility to play games with greater ease.

The charity were one of several accessibility non-profits and special interest groups asked by Microsoft to be in involved in the planning and development phases of the controller.

Set to retail for $100, the adaptive controller is affordable, easy-to-set-up and available exclusively at the Microsoft Store. Trusted Reviews has compiled everything you need to know about the Xbox Adaptive Controller including the latest news, release date, price and more.

As I discussed at the annual DICE conference in February, when we truly design for all, we help make the world more equal. These can be programmed within the Xbox Accessories app to function as any of the standard Xbox controller's inputs. The Xbox had already gained a whole host of new accessibility features including the ability to let two players to control one character.

"This is part of our long term approach to accessibility in gaming", said Bryce Johnson, Microsoft's inclusive lead in product research and accessibility, who's in charge of ensuring all Microsoft devices are designed for inclusiveness. "Button, thumbstick, and trigger inputs are controlled with assistive devices (sold separately) connected through 3.5mm jacks and USB ports".

Twitter users who pressed h0x0d for details, on whether the image represents a new Xbox, or even something related to Microsoft's new Mixed Reality or Cloud Gaming projects, finally elicited a reply. This ease of use is handy not just for disabled gamers, but also for the people who care for them, who might not be players themselves. A foot pedal, for example, could be used as an accelerator in a driving game, and to fire in a first-person shooter.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller will be available later this year for USD$99.99 (pricing for other territories is yet-to-be-confirmed).
