Alice Johnson thanks Trump for Kardashian-backed release

Alice Johnson, a woman granted clemency by United States President Donald Trump, has thanked her "war angel" Kim Kardashian West for lobbying for her release and meeting with Trump in a bid to see her freed.

Johnson learned the news of her clemency on Wednesday, during an emotional conference call with Kardashian West and her legal team.

"I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon", Kardashian West tweeted following the meeting.

Ms Johnson was released from jail yesterday, when she was immortalised on cameras while running towards her family members and hugging them in Aliceville, Alabama.

She said Trump said he had investigated the case, speaking to several people, including Johnson's warden, and everyone had "a unanimous feeling of Alice, that she will live a great life", Kardashian said.

CNN reports that Trump is on somewhat of a pardoning spree, and that the White House has prepared the paperwork for 30 people, Johnson included.

Johnson, 63, had spent more than two decades behind bars, serving life without parole for drug offenses. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance", she tweeted.

Johnson added, "This is not the end for me".

Johnson herself told Business Insider just one day earlier that she had been waiting with bated breath for news about her case since Trump and Kardashian West's meeting. "I'll do whatever it takes to get her out".

The White House announced Johnson's sentence would be commuted this afternoon, citing the fact that the great-grandmother has "accepted responsibility for her past behavior" and acted as a "model prisoner" in her almost 22 years behind bars.

Johnson is the second person commuted by Trump since taking office.

Unlike a pardon, a commutation does not expunge a criminal conviction. "I was free", Johnson said Kardashian West told her.
