Canada's Justin Trudeau and other leaders had given closing press conferences and announced a US-backed joint statement.

President Trump left the meeting half-way, warning the G7 nations that if they don't remove trade barriers with the US, they will face consequences.

Ms Freeland told reporters that she had met with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Friday and would speak to him later on Sunday, adding that she believes a deal to renew the North American Free Trade Agreement is still possible. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) said on CBS' "Face The Nation" that "right now, the President is actually driving our allies away from us as we need them even more, while welcoming in the Russians". "Our tariffs are in response to his 270 percent on dairy". "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!".

In a tweet posted Saturday evening, Trump said his decision was based on "false statements" made by Trudeau during a press conference he gave, as well as "the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs" on USA companies.

The tweets Mr Trump posted after the G7 contained direct attacks on the Canadian PM. "$800 Billion Trade Deficit", he said in another tweet.

"He held a press conference and he said the U.S.is insulting". He reiterated his longstanding view that the U.S. has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends". Trump as a result did not sign onto the joint statement concluding the meeting.

Trump rejected the text of a consensus statement, traditionally a paean to shared Western values and objectives under American leadership, in angry tweets from Air Force One.

Peter Navarro tells "Fox News Sunday" that's what Trudeau did to Trump at the end of the Group of Seven nations meeting in Canada over the weekend.

The president also tweeted from aboard Air Force One that due to "Justin's false statements" the USA would not sign on with the other six members of the G-7 to a joint communique that was to follow the meeting.

Trump's renewed comments on trade come amid a growing dispute between Washington and its top allies.
