Smoking reaching all-time low with US adults


As NBC News reported, approximately 42 percent of adults in the country smoked in the 1960s.

The Centers for Disease Control reports just under 14% of Americans smoked previous year, making it the lowest level ever recorded.

"It shows that smoking is becoming more concentrated in places where access to smoking cessation help is very limited", researcher Matthew Carpenter at the Medical University of SC, who was not involved in the study, said in a statement.

However, large disparities remain, with people living in rural areas still far more likely to smoke than city-dwellers, said the latest CDC report.

Experts suggest that the decline in smoking may stem from a better understanding that smoking is not good a person's health and the deadly diseases smoking can lead to. According to the recent CDC report, smoking among American teens is down to 9 percent.

Less credit is given to e-cigarettes, which have been marketed as a means to curb tobacco smoking but pose unknown health risks and attract more nonsmoking youths than adult smokers.
